What does the app look like?
One screen holds a large connect button, your favorite servers and the full city list. WireGuard is the default and works well for daily use. IKEv2 is built into iOS and often holds on better on a moving train or bus where the signal keeps cutting out.
With a Plus or Pro pass, ad, tracker and malicious site blocking applies to every app on the phone, including games and news apps, because requests are filtered on our DNS servers before they load.
Which settings should I turn on?
Auto reconnect is worth switching on. After the phone wakes up or moves from Wi-Fi to mobile data, the VPN comes back without you opening the app. It makes the biggest difference if you join public Wi-Fi often.
Notice the battery draining faster? Stay on WireGuard. Of the three protocols, it uses the least power in the background.
The VPN icon doesn't show up
Check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management: VPNPass should be the active configuration. If it is and nothing changes, delete the configuration on that screen and sign in to the app again.
In Low Power Mode, iOS can take longer to reconnect after the phone has been idle. If you find the VPN off, open the app once and it reconnects.
