Leave out, or only these
Leave out: the device stays on the VPN and your list names the exceptions. Most people start here, because whatever you forget to add stays protected.
Only these: your list names the apps that get the VPN, and everything else skips it. Handy when the VPN is for one or two things, say a separate browser you keep for research.
Choose whichever mode gives the shorter list. Five entries are easy to keep track of. Forty are not.
Apps people usually leave out
A banking or payment app that wants a local IP. A map app that puts you in the wrong city while the VPN is on. Casting video to a TV on the same Wi-Fi, which often fails when the phone sits inside a tunnel.
Big downloads are the other classic. A 70 GB game patch or a cloud backup runs on your regular line, while the browser stays on VPNPass.
The trade-off for left-out apps
Anything outside the tunnel shows sites your real IP and gets no encryption from us. Keep the list to apps where that is acceptable.
The kill switch ignores them as well. During a drop, those apps carry on over the bare connection.
Setting it up
Every pass, Basic through Pro, has the feature. It will be part of the VPNPass apps, which are still in preparation, and menu labels can vary a little by device.
Rules apply from the next connection. Restart any app that was already open so it picks up its new path.
- Find Split tunneling under the app's Settings
- Pick Leave out or Only these
- Tick apps from the installed list and reconnect
